I always pop the "tell me about yourself" question in the very beginning of every interview. True that other than as an icebreaker, you wanna hear a sum up of the interviewees from their own mouth/words. You know often you find impressive CVs written in flawless sentences and perfect background records, but when you hear it from their own mouth, it may give you totally different impression about this person.

It is not a basa basi question, they (interviewers) take your answers seriously and use it as part of their judgment about yourself and your personality.

I once interviewed this guy for a technician position, and when I asked the "tell me about yourself" question, he started to brag about how he knew and was close to A B C (some of the top managers in our company at that time). =)) It was funny cause when I asked A B C about the guy, they said he wasn't that good.

It's ok to share a little bit about your hobbies though. In just a few lines. If the interviewers are interested they will ask you for more on that topic. In my whole life, I've only been through one job interview as an interviewee, and one of the things that got me hired was when I told her about my hobby.
